Lukhanyo Mdingi founded his eponymous fashion label in 2015 in Cape Town with a mission to support local artisans in the city. For his spring 2023 collection, the designer drew inspiration from the street style of Burkina Faso, demonstrating his ability to fuse cultural influences into his work.<\/h2>\n\n\n

The AMIRI Prize<\/strong> was founded in 2021 by Mike Amiri<\/a><\/strong> with the intention of supporting young designers who follow non-traditional paths to establish their own brands. After a hiatus in 2022, the award has returned with a bang in 2023, with Lukhanyo Mdingi<\/a><\/strong> being chosen by a prestigious jury comprising fashion industry experts Colm Dillane, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Law Roach, Lucia Liu, June Ambrose, Rocco Liu, Salehe Bembury, Samuel Ross and Will Welch.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the major fashion award, Mdingi<\/strong> stood out among this year’s nine finalists, which included the likes of Abdel El Tayeb (France), Dorian Rahimzadeh (Iran), Ekwerike Chukwuma (Nigeria), Grace Ling, Keith Herron and Maxwell Osborne (United States), and Li Gong and Luke Zhou (China).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Amiri praised the South African designer’s work: “The talent this year was exceptional, and it was difficult to choose a favorite, but Lukhanyo’s vision and approach surprised us all. Amiri highlighted not only Mdingi’s unique aesthetic and sensibility, but also his purpose in fashion, which goes beyond the garments, seeking to positively impact his community and culture in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
