However, skin dehydration is a common problem that can make the skin look dry and itchy, and make fine lines more visible. Optimally hydrated skin contains up to 40% water in its top layer, while dehydrated skin contains less than 15% water. Dehydrated skin is due to a decrease in the water content of the skin, resulting in a less elastic appearance of the skin. It is characterised by a lack of water; even oily skin can become dehydrated. However, dehydrated skin is not permanent and can be alleviated with a proper skin care regimen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a potent moisturising ingredient found naturally in the skin; however, HA can diminish with age. Therefore, skin can benefit from topical application to help retain its moisture levels. HA has the ability to act like a sponge, retaining large amounts of water in the skin. Human skin acts as the main line of defence between the body and its environment, keeping moisture in and harmful elements out. Water retention in the skin depends on two main components: hygroscopic materials (such as hyaluronic acid) and intercellular lipids (such as ceramides). Together, these components work to create a competent skin barrier, which is the key to hydrated skin.
