Tempo Music Investments has filed the lawsuit, accusing Cyrus of copying elements of Bruno Mars&#8217; 2013 hit \u201cWhen I Was Your Man\u201d, arguing that the two songs have \u201cremarkable similarities\u201d. Although the lawsuit focuses on Mars&#8217; song, Bruno Mars himself has not filed the suit, nor is he named as a plaintiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Miley Cyrus - Flowers (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G7KNmW9a75Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Vulture, the lawsuit claims that \u2018Flowers\u2019 has lyrical overlaps with \u2018When I Was Your Man\u2019. While Mars sings, \u2018I should have bought you flowers and held your hand\u2019 and \u2018I&#8217;d take you to every party, \u201ccause all you wanted to do was dance\u201d, Cyrus responds with \u201cI can buy me flowers\u201d and \u201cI can take me dancing, and I can hold my own hand\u201d. Similarities in lyrics and lyrical references are at the heart of the lawsuit, which alleges that the two songs share similar melody, harmony and chorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legal document states: \u2018It is undeniable, based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings, that \u201cFlowers\u201d would not exist without \u201cWhen I Was Your Man\u201d\u2019. The lawsuit also states: \u2018Therefore, plaintiff brings this action for copyright infringement due to defendants\u2019 unauthorised reproduction, distribution and exploitation of \u2018When I Was Your Man\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tempo Music Investments owns part of the copyright to Mars&#8217; song after acquiring the catalogue of songwriter Philip Lawrence. In addition, the company includes in the lawsuit songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, who co-wrote \u2018Flowers\u2019, as well as Sony Music Publishing and Apple. The lawsuit also alleges that the opening vocal line of Cyrus&#8217; chorus matches chords in \u201cWhen I Was Your Man\u201d. Tempo is seeking damages, although it has not yet specified an exact figure, and demands that Cyrus cease the reproduction, distribution and public performance of \u2018Flowers\u2019. The hit was recognised as Song of the Year at the 2024 Grammy Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Bruno Mars -
