What for some was a fear and for others a long-awaited opportunity has arrived: AI-powered robots have entered the art world. The work entitled \u2018Portrait of Alan Turing\u2019, created by the innovative robot Ai-Da, is set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s, marking an unprecedented milestone by competing in the same league as works by human artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The auction will take place on 31 October, and the portrait depicts Alan Turing, one of the most influential figures in the history of computing and the forerunner of modern computer science. Sotheby’s details that this work, produced in mixed media on canvas, could fetch between $120,000 and $180,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visionary behind this project is gallerist Aidan Meller, who brought to life Ai-Da, a robot that combines aesthetics and technology: a woman with short black hair, dressed in denim overalls and a T-shirt. Ai-Da uses cameras in her eyes, AI algorithms and a robotic arm to create. According to Meller, what distinguishes this work from others generated by AI is its tangible physical manifestation, a phenomenon unheard of in the art world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We are at a time of great innovation, with the rise of robots that will gradually take over various tasks. The art is a reflection of the incredible changes that technology is bringing about in our society,\u2019 says Meller, noting that the proceeds from the auction will be reinvested in the project, given the high energy cost of its operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Bouhanna, vice president and head of digital art at Sotheby’s, says that interest in the work has exceeded expectations. \u2018The enthusiasm of collectors and their belief in the relevance of this piece to AI art has influenced my decision to set a pre-sale estimate that reflects its anticipated desirability and market potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
