We are in Berlin in the 1990s. The city is experiencing a renaissance; the Wall is no more, the doors of the clubs are wide open and the future feels like an infinite possibility for new experiences. Do you get into the role? Well, in this context, from the film series ‘Reclaiming Spaces: Berlin, the 90s’ by MUBI and the photographic exhibition at C\/O Berlin<\/a><\/strong> ‘Dream On-Berlin, the 90s’, Gerrit Jacob has created five pieces that capture the essence of a city that, with the fall of the wall, is beginning to reinvent itself, becoming the capital of subcultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The capsule collection, which includes two bags, a denim jacket, jeans and a T-shirt, is a modern and authentic homage to the subcultural elements of a changing Berlin. Jacob, true to his innovative style, manages to encapsulate the essence of an era where fashion and personal identity went hand in hand, and where each garment told the story of a youth in search of freedom. The T-shirt, for example, features hand-drawn doodles reminiscent of the walls of the bathrooms in the city’s underground clubs; a tribute to those spaces of overflowing expression that reflected both the desire for change and improvised art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For their part, the bags, intervened with stencils and spray paint, evoke the graphic and intense aesthetics of rave flyers, while the jacket and jeans represent that ideal of unbridled freedom. As a whole, each garment projects the Berlin of the 90s, a city that, between party and rebellion, was discovering a new identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the campaign, Jacob turned to the lens of Marina M\u00f3naco<\/a><\/strong>, photographer based in Berlin, who with her documentary style captures the irreverent essence of the era. Artistically directed by Bianca Batson<\/a><\/strong>, the campaign portrays a central character that glides through the city, turning the walls, bridges and streets of Berlin into part of the wardrobe itself. Through black and white and color images, the city appears as another character, a living piece of the puzzle. Among the visual elements is an airbrushed dragon on the protagonist’s skin with the phrase \u201cReclaiming spaces,\u201d a powerful statement that evokes the same indomitable spirit that MUBI has captured in its film series. Photographed on the iconic Warschauer Bridge, this image is a visual homage to the raw, anarchic beauty of an ever-changing Berlin; a place that, after the fall of the Wall, embraced uncensored freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In collaboration with 032c magazine, Gerrit Jacob and MUBI will present an exclusive panel on November 16 at C\/O Berlin, where, along with special guests, they will explore how film and fashion capture the heartbeat of a time of change not only for Germany but for the rest of the world. The conversation will focus on the cultural significance of Berlin in the 1990s, a decade of effervescence, when the city became a symbol of creative freedom and reinvention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
