The 78th Bafta Awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts took place in London last night. And you probably already know that Conclave and The Brutalist won four awards each, and Emilia P\u00e9rez won Best Foreign Language Film (although there was no joy for Spain’s Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n, who was nominated). But perhaps you didn’t notice the most stylish dolls at the event. That’s what we’re here for. Here are some of the most stylish men’s watches at the gala:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeff Goldblum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dressed by Loewe (in a feathered waistcoat?), he looked stylish in a classic dinner jacket and a Vacheron Constantin of the kind to take one’s hat off for its diamond-setting, enamelling and engraving craftsmanship. Named \u00c9g\u00e9rie Creative Edition, it is an automatic model which, according to the Swiss brand’s website, is designed for women. But there’s Goldblum, the bad guy from Wicked, to contradict them. On the watch, an intricate gold piece inspired by Burano lace sits atop a pleated tapestry motif with black translucent enamel. The off-centred moon phase between 1 and 2 o’clock features mother-of-pearl moons. It couldn’t be more romantic. And also very expensive: it costs 122,885 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n

James McAvoy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Scottish actor has not opted for simplicity either, but for a \u20ac50,000 IWC watch with a highly complicated watchmaking feature, the perpetual calendar, whose movement moves autonomously from 28 February to 1 March and registers 29 February in leap years. Its automatic Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 44 is made of 18-carat Armor Gold, a harder and more wear-resistant alloy than conventional 5N gold, according to IWC. Nor does it feature an ordinary dial, but one made from obsidian, a hard, naturally occurring, vitreous, black volcanic stone (like McAvoy’s shirtless suit and patent leather shoes), the likes of which you don’t usually see in watchmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edward Berger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film he directed, Conclave, topped the list of nominees with 12 nominations. Berger picked up the awards for Best Film and Outstanding British Film wearing a steel De Ville Prestige from Omega, with a timelessly elegant burgundy dial and matching leather strap. Functions include the date at 3 o’clock and a seconds hand at 6 o’clock. It costs 5,700 euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guy Pierce<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his blue velvet suit by Brunello Cucinelli (ideal for being sung Blue Velvet, a great song from the 1950s), Pierce, who was nominated for best supporting actor for The Brutalist and walked away empty-handed, chose a matching legendary sports specimen, also from Omega: the 10,100-euro steel Speedmaster \u201857, 40.50 mm in diameter and with a manual winding movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremy Strong<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although not an official Richard Mille ambassador, as far as we know, Strong (nominated for best supporting actor for The Apprentice) has an undisguised fondness for the brand. In this case, he has walked around with a round Richard Mille, a rarely seen choice. It is the RM 63-01 Automatic Winding Dizzy Hands chronograph that emerged in 2014 with a new watchmaking complication: the dancing hours. Basically, it works like this: when the crown is pressed, the disc on which the eclectically arranged hour digits are placed slowly rotates to the left, in the opposite direction to usual, while the hour hand also starts to move in the opposite direction and at a different speed. The dance ends when the crown is pressed again – Magnifique!<\/p>\n\n\n

Orlando Bloom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor was not nominated, but he took the opportunity to show that he is the new face of Porsche Design watches. He did so wearing the brand’s flagship All Black Numbered Edition Chronograph 1, which costs 8,950 euros and is already sold out. Crafted with a black titanium carbide coating, it is treated with glass microspheres.<\/p>\n\n\n
