The new American Eagle campaign starring Sydney Sweeney<\/a> has sparked controversy since its launch. The advert plays on the double meaning between \u201cjeans\u201d and \u201cgenes,\u201d something many have interpreted as carrying racial undertones. Doja Cat was quick to react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spot, Sweeney, the Euphoria<\/em> actress, narrates: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits such as hair colour, personality, and even eye colour,”<\/strong> as the camera pans across her body. She then fastens her jeans and, looking directly at the camera, concludes: \u201cMy jeans are blue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that Sweeney \u2014 a white woman celebrated for her blue eyes and blonde hair \u2014 is the face of a campaign linking physical attributes to the idea of \u201cgenes\u201d has been enough to provoke criticism on social media. The advert\u2019s aesthetic has been read as a glorification of certain racial standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
