A group of <strong>four professional thieves<\/strong> stole a set of jewels of \u201cincalculable heritage and historical value\u201d in <strong>just seven minutes<\/strong>, according to French authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theft forced the <strong>world\u2019s most visited museum<\/strong>, which welcomed 8.7 million visitors last year, to <strong>close its doors for the entire day<\/strong>, affecting thousands of tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Louvre in Paris has been closed after it was robbed this morning.<br><br>Jewellery of \u201cinestimable value\u201d was stolen, French minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez says. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tT7ULRfgOk\">pic.twitter.com\/tT7ULRfgOk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Pop Crave (@PopCrave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PopCrave\/status\/1979873655481151649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 19, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Interior Minister, Laurent N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/strong>, and the <strong>Culture Minister, Rachida Dati<\/strong>, arrived at the museum a few hours after the robbery to coordinate initial measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong>Paris prosecutor, Laure Beccuau<\/strong>, the incident occurred at around <strong>09:30 local time<\/strong>. The group approached the museum from the <strong>southern side<\/strong>, by the Seine, using <strong>two motorcycles and a truck with a freight lift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this equipment, they reached the <strong>first floor<\/strong>, specifically the <strong>Apollo Gallery<\/strong>, where two of the thieves <strong>forced a window with cutting discs<\/strong>. They then <strong>broke into two display cases<\/strong>, one showcasing diamonds and another containing <strong>Second Empire jewels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation was <strong>quick, silent, and non-violent<\/strong>. Museum staff <strong>evacuated visitors calmly and efficiently<\/strong>, and no one was injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-the-stolen-jewels\">The Stolen Jewels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The thieves took <strong>eight main pieces<\/strong> from the Napoleonic collection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>diadem<\/strong> of Queen Maria Amelia and Queen Hortense.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>sapphire necklace<\/strong> from the same set.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <strong>earring<\/strong> from the same collection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <strong>emerald necklace<\/strong> of Queen Marie Louise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>pair of emerald earrings<\/strong> from the same queen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>brooch<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>diadem of Empress Eug\u00e9nie<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another <strong>brooch of Empress Eug\u00e9nie de Montijo<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During their escape, the group <strong>lost the crown of Empress Eug\u00e9nie<\/strong>, the Spanish wife of <strong>Emperor Napoleon III (1852\u20131870)<\/strong>. After the fall of the Second Empire, the French state sold it in 1885 as a symbol of the end of the monarchy. Over a century later, a donation allowed it to return to the <strong>national heritage<\/strong>. No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The Symbolic Value of the Crown Jewels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The stolen jewels belong to a collection that <strong>represents centuries of French history<\/strong>. According to the Louvre, the <strong>\u201cC\u00f4te de Bretagne\u201d<\/strong>, a spinel that belonged to <strong>Anne of Brittany<\/strong>, is one of the oldest gems preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum also houses <strong>three historic diamonds<\/strong>: the <strong>Regent<\/strong>, the <strong>Sancy<\/strong>, and the <strong>Hortensia<\/strong>, which adorned crowns and royal garments. Among the most spectacular pieces are the <strong>emerald and diamond sets<\/strong> that belonged to <strong>Empress Marie Louise<\/strong>, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Minister N\u00fa\u00f1ez reminded, \u201c<strong>these jewels are valuable not only for their precious stones but because they tell our history<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Criticism Over Louvre Security<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Communist Senator Ian Brossat<\/strong> criticised the government for ignoring warnings from museum staff.
