A commitment to diversity<\/em>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mattel has launched its first autistic Barbie as part of its commitment to diversity. The doll joins the Barbie Fashionistas line, created to showcase different bodies, abilities and social realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new model arrives in US shops this week. It adds to a collection that already includes dolls with Down syndrome, visual impairment, type 1 diabetes, vitiligo, prosthetics, hearing aids and different body types<\/strong>. The aim is for more children to see themselves reflected, or to recognise others, through play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For its development, Mattel worked for more than 18 months with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network<\/strong>. The collaboration sought to represent some of the ways people on the autism spectrum perceive and understand their surroundings. The company works from the idea that there is no single autism experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
