The craze for ChatGPT-generated caricatures has exploded almost without warning and, as often happens,<strong> it begins with <em>\u201chow amazing\u201d<\/em> and quickly shifts to <em>\u201chang on a minute\u2026\u201d<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal is obvious. You upload a photo, write a prompt along the lines of <em><strong>\u201ccreate a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me\u201d<\/strong><\/em> and, within seconds, a digital double appears\u2014exaggerated, but uncannily recognisable. It\u2019s not just a pretty filter. What\u2019s interesting (and unsettling) is that the image is built on information you\u2019ve already shared with the chatbot, whether through previous conversations or the data you choose to provide in that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the trend takes a turn. Unlike other recent fads\u2014such as when half the internet turned itself into a Studio Ghibli character\u2014these caricatures don\u2019t just play with aesthetics. They play with<strong> the idea that AI <em>\u201cknows you\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. And the more it knows, the sharper the illustration becomes. Job, daily routine, working environment, personal interests\u2026 it all adds up to a more precise result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, so fun. Profession, habits, workplace environment, clues about schedules\u2014even visual details <strong>that make it possible to identify someone<\/strong>, even if their name is never mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the image is based on a real photograph, other less visible factors come into play, such as metadata\u2014location, date, device used. Information we rarely see, but which exists. And once the image starts circulating online, <strong>it loses context and control<\/strong>. It can be downloaded, reused, reinterpreted or end up in places you never considered when you hit \u201cpost\u201d. Although the company states that data is not kept indefinitely, it does not specify how long it remains on its servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk increases when shared images include minors, vulnerable individuals or information that could be used for identity impersonation. In the event of a security breach, those photos\u2014along with their metadata\u2014could be exposed and exploited for <em>phishing<\/em> attacks, online harassment or social engineering campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-alarmism-not-quite\">Alarmism? Not quite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s worth being clear: this isn\u2019t an immediate dystopia or a digital apocalypse. Many people share these caricatures without consequences and enjoy the creative aspect with no drama. The risk isn\u2019t automatic; it\u2019s <strong>potential<\/strong>, and largely depends on how much you share and how you do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pattern is familiar. The more \u201cfree\u201d the tool, the more important it is to ask what the exchange really is. In this case, data in return for entertainment. If you understand that and you\u2019re comfortable with it, fine. But it also forces us to sharpen our judgement.
