35% of University Students Admit to Using Their Phones During Sex

A study of 10,000 students confirms the phone is now the third presence in bed, although real-life sparks still win out.

The mobile phone no longer leaves our hands — not even in the most intimate moments. A survey carried out by the platforms Yik Yak and Sidechat among 10,000 students across more than 500 universities reveals that 35% admit to texting or checking social media while having sex. And if that were not enough, 24 students confessed to messaging their mothers during the act. It may sound surreal, but the figures speak for themselves.

Beyond the headline-grabbing details, the study also challenges a few assumptions about modern dating. Although dating apps are widespread, more than 70% say they met their current or most recent partner in person, face to face, without profiles or filters involved. By contrast, 29% report that their parents met online — a reminder that the internet has been shaping relationships for longer than we might think.

Digital trust is another factor. Twenty-two per cent admit to checking their partner’s phone “all the time”, while 15% say they did so and later regretted it. Meanwhile, 15% confessed to leaving one date to be intimate with someone else — and said they would do it again. Candid, if not always commendable.

University living arrangements add another layer: 7% have had sex while their roommate was awake and in the room, while 15% waited until their roommate had fallen asleep. The data includes responses from campuses such as Harvard University, Brown University, Rutgers University and San Diego State University, among many others.

According to CEO Kyle Venn, the anonymity of these platforms allows students to answer more honestly, turning private experiences into public data. Ultimately, it paints a fairly clear picture of university life today, with phones ever-present and relationships still beginning in person.
