If every time you come back from the beach you notice your hair is dry and frizzy, even after washing it, maybe you’re not treating it properly after hours of sun and sea. Salt water, sand and prolonged exposure to the sun damage and weaken our hair, making it more fragile, brittle and dehydrated, prone to breakage and split ends, but also causing a loss of colour and shine. The solution is a compendium of good habits, routine care and the right hair products.
Tips to revive your hair
1.Beware of untangling wet hair
This is one of the first things you should never do, nor should you comb it: “It’s better to do it dry, leave it in the open air and then comb it. When it’s wet, the hair fibre is more fragile and if you comb it, it will break”, says María García, head of customer experience at Dalire shampoos.
2. . Wash your hair when you get home from the beach
A quick shower after a dip in the sea is not enough to protect your hair from sun and salt damage. That’s why it’s good to wash your hair thoroughly to completely remove sand and salt residues from the scalp. This will make it easier to give it a new shine.
3. Avoid cowashing
A very popular technique is that of collagen washing, i.e. using only conditioner to wash the hair. Although it has its advantages, during beach holidays this practice does not guarantee perfect cleanliness, which is essential when you have to deal with salinity in particular: “You should go back to shampooing during the summer period, when your hair is already under more stress. After washing and rinsing your hair, you can apply a conditioner without any problem”.
4. Do not rinse with hot water
To wash your hair after being in the sun, it is best to use lukewarm water. High temperatures open the hair cuticles, making them duller and less colourful. Following the same principle, after the normal wash you can do an additional rinse using only cold water: you will have shiny, perfect hair.
5. Nourish hair with a special cream
After washing it properly, you can still give it extra moisture and nutrition with vitamins and ingredients such as coconut oil, rosemary, birch or nettle.
6. Use sunscreen on your hair
Use a heat protection spray that is sprayed along the length of the hair to prevent damage from high temperatures. The protective film ensures healthier and stronger hair, but also shinier hair if UV keratin is added.
7. Don’t dye it
If you’ve dyed your hair and have noticed that it has lost colour, it’s best not to dye it again. Hair needs a break after the stress it has been subjected to during the summer, and ammonia-based dyes are not the best: “If you don’t want to give it up, opt for a colour bath, a much more natural and less invasive technique, perfect for giving your hair a new shine”, advises María García.
