Matthew M. Williams brings a new air to Givenchy’s classic elegance

The FW23 collection by Matthew M. Williams takes on an updated component of Givenchy’s classic glamour and elegance.

The FW23 collection by Matthew M. Williams takes on an updated component of Givenchy’s classic glamour and elegance.

For this collection, Williams studies a reinterpretation of elegance in women’s fashion. The pillars on which he bases his latest creations are confidence, comfort and women’s empowerment, and he uses for them the classic shapes giving them a new air through contemporary elements. The designer revisits Givenchy’s past and adds updates to his silhouettes. In his FW23 presented in Paris he repeats elements from his past men’s line, while adding new women’s creations to the collection.

Sitting in the front row of the runway show was Carine Roitfeld, who has previously worked alongside Williams for Givenchy on women’s fashion. “We dialogued about how to make desirable clothes. The women around me inspire me so much. And spending so much time with Carine, she understands the house very well. We literally just talk about clothes,” stated Williams.

The collection opens with a line of tailored black tailoring featuring pleats on the back and on each side of the jackets and coats. Mini jackets and two leather jackets, one in black and one in purple, follow. On the catwalk, Givenchy presents long coats with voluminous shoulders and tightly closed buttons that fit the garment to the silhouette.

In this line, William experiments with both transparencies and a slightly more streetwear alternative. The off-the-shoulder evening dresses open at the chest and feature a back train, being a clear example of this evolution of the fashion house’s elegance. They are further complemented by opera gloves that add drama. The designer uses luxurious materials such as satin, cashmere, mohair or tricotine giving the collection sophistication and glamour.

And talking about FW23, don’t miss Dior FW23-24: An ode to Catherine Dior, Édith Piaf and Juliette Gréco.
