Fendi chooses Naomi Campbell as the face of the Peekaboo handbag campaign in honor of the iconic piece’s history.
Fendi’s iconic Peekaboo bag was unveiled for the first time at the Spring/Summer 2009 show, with the intention of returning the focus to design and quality craftsmanship in response to the “it-bag” concept. The brand selected the iconic Naomi Campbell to star in the campaign, whose personality and background perfectly match the energy of the product.
“At the time there was an invasion of handbags on runways around the world, so I really wanted to create a bag that only a true leather goods manufacturer like FENDI could make,” commented Silvia Venturini Fendi. “It was time to set the record straight with a new classic. I wanted to evoke the beauty of a vintage bag with a zipper, but for the first time make it about the movement of the bag.”
“With the Peekaboo, I really wanted to capture that idea in a bag. That’s why I chose a very soft leather, because the bag would show open and inside you could discover a different color of a very nice glove leather. It’s a bag to experience: when you put your hands inside a Peekaboo, you can feel one of the softest leathers in the world,” he added.
The minimalist piece is trapeze-shaped, with a double-loop closure at the top and eye-shaped hardware. When opened it shows a suspended drape that forms a sort of curved “smile”. Check out the luxurious bag in Naomi Campbell’s hands on the Fendi website.
