A French Riviera palace and a sunset are the witnesses of a collection co-designed by Dua Lipa and Donatella Versace in which there are many nods to the Versace archives of the 90s.
Capturing the essence of Gianni’s Versace, “La Vacanza” features fun prints, polka dots and sequins. They all take shape in elevated and glamorous everyday, party and beachwear looks. The pink and blue colors evoke Y2K fashion and the barbiecore trend, which is a must this year. In addition, the collaborative work between the singer and the designer includes mini skirts, cut outs, tiny tops, oversized blazers. Versace’s iconic knee-high strappy footwear brings us into a more 2000s era of the brand.
The element that was key in the Dior Cruise this weekend has also been the star in the Versace Resort proposal. Butterflies have made their appearance not only in the promotional campaign but also on the catwalk in prints, accessories and appliqués. Versace’s relationship with this insect goes back a long way, because already in its 1993 RTW collection, the Italian firm confessed its love for these little bugs.
The catwalk has been full of references to Versace’s stellar moments in the 90s, with the iconic supermodels wearing their designs. Dua Lipa’s dress to close the show with Donatella is a clear reference to the one Claudia Schiffer wore in the FW92 show: a dress with pockets covering the bust.
Taking a cue from the past, “La Vacanza” has been responsible for marking a milestone in the industry. It is the first collaboration between a luxury brand and a singer. And what’s more, it has also made history on the French Riviera, being the first time a fashion show is held as part of the Cannes Film Festival.
Thinking every detail and reinterpreting the Italian codes under the narration of Ivan De Pineda, the collection has been a success. It is possibly one of the most outstanding Resort collections of the season. Are we in front of the perfect “Combi Versace”? Donatella Versace and Dua Lipa certainly understand each other well. Off the runway we already knew, but it is clear from this design work that they also understand each other on the inside.
The complete collection is now available for purchase in stores and on versace.com
