The studio has decided to adopt a discreet and mysterious marketing strategy around Miyazaki’s latest animated film, avoiding releasing trailers or commercials prior to the theatrical release. Details of the plot, cast and crew have also been kept under wraps to preserve the mysterious charm of the work.
Now we can get a first glimpse of the essence of “The Boy and the Heron” thanks to a new selection of images that Studio Ghibli has shared on its website.
Although the plot of Hayao Miyazaki’s feature film remains an enigma, this set of images transports us to the director’s magnificent cinema. Fantastic creatures star in the scenes, with elements reminiscent of films such as “Princess Mononoke,” “Arrietty” and “Howl’s Traveling Castle.”
Titled “Kimitachi wa Do Ikiruka” in Japan, the film has announced international release dates for select countries only. “The Boy and the Heron” will be the opening feature at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 9. In addition, it will also be part of the New York Film Festival (NYFF) program, which runs from September 29 to October 15.
