The arctic nature and the threat of its hostile terrain is the backdrop of David Koma Pre-Fall 23 collection. The brand makes us travel to the Arctic Circle to admire the beauty of its desolate frozen terrain through garments ready for the real winter.
Always inspired by the excellence of women in different fields of action, David Koma looks to DeeDee Ann Jonrowe this time around. The female record holder in the annual Iditarod Trail sled dog race, the runner is the starting point for the collection. DeeDee’s signature ruffled puffa jacket dress sets the tone for the season’s contemporary study of polar adventurous looks. Quilting comes reinvented through the lens of David Koma, materializing in hooded jackets, puffa mini dresses with plunging necklines and long skirts. The David Koma-like dresses are embellished with plush Mongolian sheepskin, which is also seen on necklines and collars, creating volume.
Husky harnesses and sled straps are evoked in the joining techniques of embroidered crystal chains and thick leather detail embellishments. 3D-encrusted crystal buckles suspend on the garments, forming eye-catching necklines and giving the appearance of ice.
Motomami-like quilted leather garments oppose the need for protection from the polar elements. A sense of danger materializes through spiked collars and cuffs, juxtaposed with delicate sheer gathered tulle dresses. Classic utilitarian blue denim is reinvented in corseted mini-dresses, and fitted jackets and coats.
Koma’s classic metal toe returns with thigh-high cowboy silhouettes, and stiletto-heeled boots in soft black nappa leather and cowhide. Elsewhere, long Mongolian sheepskin covers come on top of knee-high boots as warmers, echoing the traditional footwear of polar dwellers.
In short, in this Pre-Fall 23, Koma Girl is reincarnated as a dark snow queen. Roaming the Arctic lands, she sports a wardrobe that celebrates the strength of her adventurous spirit and reflects the beauty of an all-terrain woman.
