Over the last century, the Italian brand has maintained a constant evolution, offering technical outerwear designed to face the adversities of the alpine environment.
In honor of this milestone, Colmar has released a short documentary that offers a glimpse into its history, highlighting the key moments that have contributed to its success and recognition in the fashion world. From its beginnings making cotton suits for laborers and gas station attendants, to the creation of high-performance skiwear worn by members of the Italian national ski team in the 1950s, Colmar has experienced tremendous growth over the years.
The documentary also reveals the story behind the birth of Colmar in 1931, just outside Milan, Italy. Founded by Mario and Irma Colombo shortly after they married, the couple began as a small hat company that used defective wool felt cones to manufacture gaiters, an essential men’s fashion accessory of the time.
A turning point in Colmar’s history was its foray into workwear, through a high-profile collaboration with Leo Gasperl, a naturalized Italian-Austrian national who was on a mission to break the world speed record in skiing. This collaboration marked the beginning of Colmar’s ongoing partnership with athletes and alpine skiing champions, which generated new ideas and suggestions for the creation of products designed for high performance.
Today, Colmar is in the hands of the fourth generation of the Colombo family, with Mario, Carlo and Giulio Colombo at the helm. Led by Stefano Colombo, Mario’s son, along with Roberta Colombo and Riccardo Vago, this new generation continues the tradition of innovation and avant-garde design. Colmar, along with its three-year-old A.G.E. sub-brand, focuses on offering products that combine contemporary fashion with functional and stylish elements for alpine wear.
While celebrating its past, Colmar looks to the future with a vision to continue creating innovative, high-quality garments for its customers. You can now watch the documentary online above.
