Balearic Islands to take extreme measures against drunken tourists

The Islands are considering expelling people with inappropriate behaviour or banning them from re-entering for a period of time.

Balearic Islands to take extreme measures against drunken tourists

In 2020, a decree was passed to put an end to the rampant binge-drinking tourism in areas such as Magaluf in Mallorca and the West End of San Antonio in Ibiza. The measures included fines of up to 60,000 euros for tourists caught balconing, as well as restrictions on the amount of alcohol served during meals in bars or all-inclusive hotels.

The regulation also banned vending machines and the sale of alcoholic beverages in shops between 21:30 and 8:00, and suspended the granting of new licences for party boats, alcoholic excursions or pubcrawling, alcohol advertising and happy hour or 2-for-1 promotions.

Although balconing has declined, excessive alcohol consumption by tourists is still on the rise, with another concern looming: group sexual assaults. For this reason, by 2024 they intend to extend these regulations not only to certain streets in certain localities, including Magaluf and San Antonio, but also to the whole of the islands.

In short: one of the main changes they are considering is to apply more forceful sanctions against this type of uncivic tourism, i.e. visitors with anti-social behaviour. For this reason, they do not rule out extreme measures such as expelling people with inappropriate behaviour from the islands or banning them from re-entering for a period of time.
