Sudanese-Canadian musician Mustafa has revealed that his debut studio album, “Dunya” (Arabic for “the world in all its flaws”), will be released on 27 September via Jagjaguwar. Mustafa shared the news on his Instagram along with the official music video for the album’s fifth song, “SNL”. In his post, he wrote: “SNL. Track 5 from my debut album, out July 11.”
The video, directed by Mustafa himself, shows the singer and songwriter performing his lyrics amidst friends in the street. “And the day I had you/You were screaming gangs in my room/You sprayed me with perfume,” he sings. “Then we took the night, we took a walk/And you were singing a lullaby on the street n****“.
SNL” was produced by Rodaidh McDonald, Simon Hessman and Aaron Dessner of The National. McDonald and Hessman were also involved in the production of other songs from “Dunya” that have already been released: “Imaan”, “Name of God” and “Gaza Is Calling”. “Dunya” follows Mustafa’s “When Smoke Rises” EP, released in 2021. This upcoming album is his most ambitious project to date, featuring collaborations with artists such as JID, Rosalía, Clairo, Nicolás Jaar, Daniel Caesar and Ramy Youssef.
