With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games just days away, it is difficult to guess who the official medal winners will be, but what we do know is the uniforms their athletes will be wearing throughout the competition. Some countries, such as Mongolia, Italy and France, have taken the opportunity to create unique designs. Other delegations, such as Spain, have come up with more practical designs. We take a look at the most interesting proposals:
Mongolia
The Mongolian delegation is said to have won the gold medal for the best uniform design for their delegation. With intricately embroidered waistcoats, pleated tunics and accessories inspired by traditional dress. The designs are the work of Michel&Amazonka, an Ulaanbaatar-based brand that produces couture and ready-to-wear garments that ‘express the essence of Mongolian tradition and culture’ in what the brand calls a ‘contemporary light’.
France
Le coqs sportif has designed a uniform adapted to both Olympic and Paralympic athletes to reflect the essence of the culture and love of sport of the host country: France. The T-shirts and sweatshirts are already a bestseller.
Haiti
Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean, an early advocate and champion of diversity and inclusion in fashion! With the collaboration of Haitian painter Philippe Doddard whose artwork is incorporated into the delegation’s designs combining elegance and creativity. However at the moment the delegation is having a difficult time as the country is unable to afford to send the athletes to the Olympics.
Italy
Behind the uniform that the Italian athletes will be wearing is one of the greatest names in the history of fashion. None other than Giorgio Armani. It is a set of elegant and minimalist garments with navy blue as the main protagonist of the proposal. On the sweatshirts, the word Italy in big white letters gets all the attention.
Australia
Australia’s bid has the Sports Craft brand logo and is inspired by and pays homage to Parisian culture and style. A nod to Paris, the host city. The skirt of the women’s kit has some similarities to the Spanish one, although it is shorter.
Ethiopia
adidas has created a uniform for the Ethiopian athletes that has received rave reviews for its modern and contemporary design. We will see the world’s best runners on parade in it. The cotton fabric, the country’s colours and the slightly shorter than usual sweatshirt remind us that this year’s games will indeed take place in 2024.
United Kingdom
The British have opted for a brand that says a lot about British design and elegance: Ben Sherman. Dressed by mods in the 60s, this brand has always been known for encapsulating the magic of the unique British style. In addition to the colours of the Union Jack, the brand has opted to add flowers to almost every piece in the Olympic and Paralympic collection.
United States
No uniform presentation is without controversy. On this occasion, the United States has come under fire for proposing uniforms that are very low-cut in the groin area for the female athletes, but long and comfortable for the men. Many users have seen in these Nike designs the long shadow of patriarchy.
Japan
The Japanese haven’t gone to any trouble. They have opted for the sports brand Asics, the flagship of the Japanese country. Their proposal is minimalist and simple. Very little artifice so that all the attention goes to the athletes’ achievements.
Jamaica
Puma dresses the Jamaican delegation. The new kits were praised for their innovative design, which highlights the speed and elegance of the athletes. From strategically placed cut lines to Warpspeed graphics that capture the essence of movement, every detail was carefully designed to maximise performance and aesthetics. In addition, the fabric technology used ensures comfort and breathability, essential for optimal performance on the track.
