The Mexican-American designer took New York Fashion Week by storm with a very personal proposal and a surprising collaboration with adidas.
Putting the finishing touch to the first day of NYFW, Willy Chavarria took over an industrial venue located in the heart of Wall Street to delight all attendees with ‘America’, a tribute to immigration and a call for unity through fashion. For this, he was joined by the renowned Mexican regional music group Yahritza Y Su Esencia, who covered Juan Gabriel‘s classic ‘Querida’ and set the scene.
Divided into two parts, the first part of the collection showcases the designer’s workwear know-how as well as sporty influences and nods to more elevated styles, through the lens of an immigrant in America. In Willy‘s own words: ‘I was very inspired by the United Farm Workers Movement, the Civil Rights Movement and the women’s liberation movements of the past, which have really brought people together to create change’.
The second act, co-starring adidas, unveiled a co-branded selection of abstract tops, shorts, sports jackets and track and field jerseys, with a star appearance by Olympic athlete Noah Lyles.
