Birkenstock 1774 x Filson: a meeting of design and functionality

Birkenstock, whose roots date back to 1774, joins forces with Filson, the American heritage brand equipping explorers and adventurers for over 127 years, for an exclusive collaboration. The collection of three new models, designed to roam the wilderness of the modern world, is the result of a true fusion of both brands’ legacy of supreme quality, historic craftsmanship and timeless designs, and emphasises their inherent traditions of fine craftsmanship, function and an authentic connection to the land.

Though separated by continents, both brands are cut from the same cloth, which is why the collaboration recalls the natural environment of the northern United States by applying rustic finishes to earthy materials like Mackinaw wool, waxed cotton and leather. Combining Filson’s distinctive heritage of ‘Original Alaska Outfitter’ with Birkenstock’s DNA, the collaboration imagines practical, rough-hewn footwear with a rustic, handcrafted identity. Shades of forest green, fire orange, mink and tan browns make up the elemental colour palette, while a custom stamped logo or antique brass buckle-ring adorns the facades of each model.

The collection introduces London Methow, Lahti and Skykomish to the collaboration’s repertoire with their own unique combinations of practicality and durability. Designed as a low top shoe, the London Methow is constructed with an adjustable buckle strap and malleable unlined leathers, soft enough to feel the sensation of the earth beneath your feet. The Lahti is a soft hunting boot with a cosy, foldable upper of Filson’s exclusive Mackinaw wool, complete with a slip-resistant outsole. The Skykomish is a rustic yet utilitarian style boot with a Filson’s trademark tin cloth, also known as waxed cotton, upper and a textured rubber mudguard that is perfectly suited to both urban park walks and mountain hikes.

The Lahti and Skykomish boots from the collaboration have a standout feature: Birkenstock’s signature blue footbed. This anatomically shaped footbed, inspired by the natural movement of the foot, is easy to insert and remove and offers exceptional support and pressure distribution. Perfect for those seeking Birkenstock’s unique support, the Deep Blue footbed promotes a barefoot feel, making it an ideal feature for this collection.

The collaboration will be available from 22 October at filson.com, 1774.com and selected shops worldwide.

After reinventing the Boston and Zurich models with BEAMS, it is now the turn of the classic Birkenstock London moccasin.
