What is moistumasking and why is it the best for this winter?

At times when temperatures are very high or very low and in rather dry areas, hydration tends to weaken. This is why it is not uncommon to feel tight skin from December to March or so. ‘Excessive cold reduces the levels of lipids that make up the skin barrier and are essential for skin tissue to retain the moisture it needs to stay balanced,’ says Daniel Jiménez, cosmetologist and technical director of Skin Generics and CEO of BeLab Services.

That’s why, once a week, an extra moisturiser may be the best thing for your skin and we come to you with a proposal: ‘replace two days a week your moisturiser with a mask to give it a boost of energy and replenish everything it may be lacking’, explains the cosmetologist.

Where does moisturising come from?

Literally, the concept comes from the union of moisturizer and mask, the terms for our moisturiser and for a mask in English. If we delve into the meaning of the word, what it means is that you use a mask to give your skin the hydration it’s lacking. ‘This doesn’t mean that your moisturiser is bad, but skin sometimes needs a boost to revitalise itself. That’s why exfoliation is so important, but also to give it an extra boost of energy and hydration, especially in times of extreme cold or stress, and here a mask can help a lot,’ says Daniel Jiménez.

Did I mention stress? Yes, as you read, because if you have a very intense life, maybe you don’t need to moisturise your skin so much, but you do need to give it an energy shot to revitalise it and restore its natural glow, as ‘anxiety can raise cortisol levels and make the skin look dull’, he adds.

How to moistumasking

If you are in doubt about how to implement this concept into your routine, you should always do it in your evening routine to support the skin’s natural regeneration process. If we are lacking moisture, we will turn to a moisturising mask. If, on the other hand, what we see is duller skin, a regenerating or brightening mask will be the best option.

The key is that the two days you do this routine should not be consecutive and that, in addition, the mask should replace the cream. In other words, don’t apply both because you could overload the tissue, give it more than it needs and cause breakouts or unwanted reactions.

Quantity is key

It’s important to keep quantity in mind for this to work. Typically, when you apply a mask, you will use more than the amount you would use with your moisturiser. In this case, the recommendation is to use ‘the same amount that you would use if you were going to use your moisturiser, which, on average, corresponds to one pearl to cover the face’, she says, adding: ‘this way, you’ll give extra but you won’t risk using too much that you might have to remove if you see that there’s too much residue’, she adds.
