BLACKPINK’s Rosé talks about the taboo of love relationships in K-pop

If you know, you know: in K-pop, talking about your love relationships in K-pop is almost taboo, which leads to speculation. This year, BLACKPINK’s Lisa broke the silence with her single Moonlit Floor, where she made reference to her French boyfriend, Frederic Arnauld. Meanwhile, following the success of APT, Rosé also decided to open a window into her personal life, touching on the strict rules about dating in the K-pop industry.

‘Wait, can we say this?’ wondered Rosé during the interview, as she hesitated over what she could and couldn’t share. ‘Maybe it’s too much. Shouldn’t we?’ The singer admitted that the vulnerability and rules of the industry have made it difficult for her to express herself openly. ‘It’s not crazy stuff, really. It’s pretty normal stuff,’ she said, previewing what could be part of her next album. And while he wanted to talk about love and romance, he confessed that he still dreads the idea.

In the K-pop world, agencies keep a tight grip on their artists’ love lives, preferring idols to follow an image of eternal singles, so that fans feel closer to them. ‘They want fans to feel like they have a relationship with their idols,’ explained journalist Lulu García-Navarro.

Rosé, however, acknowledges the absurdity of the situation: ‘Yes, it’s not normal. It’s not normal. But it’s not normal for me either. Although she has always been surrounded by mystery about her personal life, the singer says she has never felt the need to confirm or deny anything. ‘But this album is different. I want people to understand that it’s not about who is or isn’t in my life. It’s about the art, the emotions that inspire me, what I want to express. It’s not about my personal story, it’s about the story I want to tell with my music.’

Indomie is not content with being a classic, and has gone one step further by partnering with one of the most popular bands of the moment: NewJeans.
