A$AP Rocky has officially joined the cast of Highest 2 Lowest, the highly anticipated film directed by Spike Lee that promises to offer a “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low (1963). Rocky will play the role of Yung Felon. Although it has not yet been confirmed how his character will fit into the plot, Lee himself shared in an interview with Deadline that the artist will occupy “the main role” in the film. In addition, the filmmaker revealed that Ice Spice will also have a part in the film, although the details of his role have not been detailed.
Highest 2 Lowest is based on Kurosawa’s classic crime thriller and will star Denzel Washington, who will play a music mogul. “In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker,” Lee commented. “In our version, Denzel is a music mogul with his own record label, known for his talent for spotting the best sounds in the business. This will be our fifth collaboration, a return to the duet that has been key in my career.”
Kurosawa’s film, High and Low, is loosely inspired by the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain (pseudonym of Evan Hunter) and tells the story of a corporate executive who gets caught up in an extortion when his driver’s son is kidnapped for ransom. In that version, Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai starred in the lead roles.
Highest 2 Lowest will be distributed by A24 and will hit theaters before its global release on Apple TV+.
