Dry skin in winter: how to treat and care for it

It is normal to find our skin drier and dehydrated in the winter months, as the blood vessels react by narrowing to the cold, in addition to the problem of heating or others. Esperanza Sáenz, from the firm Nezeni Cosmetics and Filip Van, CEO of Di Oleo, give us the keys to having and maintaining it continuously in good condition, also analyzing the main symptoms, risk factors and preventive methods.

We understand dry skin to be that which produces less sebum than normal, since the lipids of the epidermis and certain proteins are responsible for maintaining water and avoiding dehydration. When the body has a lipid or protein deficit, water evaporates more easily and without water, the complexion dries out and loses its protective barrier against external influences, which can damage it more easily, cause rashes and give it a flaky appearance: “The main symptoms are tighter and rougher skin to the touch, itching, peeling, wrinkles or fine lines. Dry skin is actually a very common condition that accounts for almost 40% of visits to the dermatologist, with women being the most affected, although both men and women suffer from this dryness as we age” – explains Esperanza Sáenz, image manager at Nezeni Cosmetics.

Types of dry skin

Basically there are three: contact, atopic and seborrheic. The first is a condition that occurs after the skin comes into contact with something irritating or allergen, developing localized inflammation and itching. Atopic skin is the famous eczema, a very common and chronic skin condition characterized by dryness and itching, usually appearing with a red rash. Finally, seborrheic skin is the one that causes dandruff problems, causing rough and flaky skin on the scalp and face.

Causes, risk factors and prevention

One of the causes of this dry skin could be our bathing habits, curiously more due to excessive cleaning than by default, also using very hot water or strong and irritating soaps, disinfectants and other products that can be abrasive: “We should avoid using soap every time we wash our face. The best thing is a gentle cleanser that does not dry out and that provides hydration, such as a good all-in-one micellar water” – advises Nezeni Cosmetics. The best prevention, also in winter, is a change in lifestyle, a good skin care regimen and natural home remedies to improve the condition: “In addition to a gentle cleanser that serves as a toner to balance the pH, a good serum enriched with hyaluronic acid and a moisturizing cream that seals in moisture keeping the surface layer hydrated for longer should not be missing.”

Among the most effective home remedies, the natural cosmetics firm Di Oleo recommends coconut oil for its antimicrobial and inflammation-reducing properties, olive oil for its power to improve elasticity and hydration without greasing the skin, or aloe vera, used for almost all problems and conditions that affect the skin for its great benefits. At home, we can put on avocado and honey masks, oatmeal, and use sugar scrubs with different oils.

Filip Van, CEO of Di Oleo, gives us some keys to prevent dry skin: “Moisturize regularly with a good moisturizer on the face and body, use warm water instead of hot water and do not spend more than 5-10 minutes in the shower, nor use sponges or other materials designed to rub the epidermis, change care products if necessary and drink plenty of water, this will increase our energy and make the dermis look younger and brighter. Also, protect ourselves well now that winter is coming and avoid certain detergents when washing clothes. Once at home, use a humidifier so that the air is not too dry and affects our skin.”
