Austin Butler to star as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho remake

Austin Butler will take on the role of Patrick Bateman in the remake of American Psycho, the iconic Bret Easton Ellis novel, which will be reinterpreted for the screen by filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. The new adaptation will be produced by Lionsgate, and although it will be based on the original literary work, it will not be a remake of the 2000 film that catapulted Christian Bale to stardom with his portrayal of the disturbing yuppie serial killer.

The remake will be scripted by Scott Z. Burns, known for his work on Contagion and The Report. Although it had previously been rumoured that Jacob Elordi could be the protagonist, it is Butler who will finally play Bateman, a character whose complex psychopathy and coldness will remain at the centre of the story.

The film, which will retain its 1980s backdrop, promises to bring a fresh take on Ellis’ classic. Guadagnino, acclaimed for his work on films such as Call Me by Your Name, Challengers and most recently Queer, is known for his unique approach that fuses sensuality with the disturbing. With his track record, it wouldn’t be surprising if the director brings a new erotic dimension to this horror satire, expanding on the disturbing tone of the source material.

Production on the remake will begin once Guadagnino finishes shooting After the Hunt, his next project starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. Fans of the novel and Guadagnino’s films will be on the lookout for further developments.

A$AP Rocky officially joins the cast of Highest 2 Lowest.
