Winter can be a challenging season for maintaining healthy hair, as the cold and heating contribute to dryness and damage. Implementing a night-time hair care routine is therefore essential to protect hair and ensure it stays hydrated and strong at all times. Among all the things to do before bedtime is a good, gentle brushing to remove knots and distribute the scalp’s natural oils throughout the hair, using only a natural bristle brush or wide-toothed comb to avoid breakage.
This step helps to keep hair tangle-free and reduce overnight friction: ‘Also, don’t forget to apply a hair mask at night or a leave-in treatment for dry, damaged hair. Highly nourishing ingredients such as argan and coconut oils or shea butter should not be missing in the composition, as they retain moisture and repair the strands while you sleep’ – says María García, Dalire’s customer experience manager.
Regarding bedding, it is better for our hair if the pillowcase is made of silk or satin. Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from the hair and generate friction, which contributes to frizz and breakage. Silk or satin pillowcases, on the other hand, allow the hair to glide smoothly, maintaining moisture and reducing frizz. David Lesur of David Künzle salons even talks about certain hairstyles that protect hair while we sleep, such as the low bun or loose braids, as they help protect the ends and prevent hair from tangling: ‘They should not be tightened too much, as they can cause tension on the scalp and damage to the strands’.
María García, from the firm Dalire, advises applying a moisturising serum before bed to keep hair nourished during the night, preferably with ingredients such as vitamin E, panthenol or jojoba oil for deep hydration and to protect hair from dryness: ‘Don’t forget the scalp, especially if you suffer from flaking during the winter, massage a few drops of almond or rosemary oil on it and this will improve circulation and nourish the skin. Massaging at night also stimulates hair growth.
Other tips for night-time hair care
1/ Going to bed with wet hair is harmful, as it becomes more brittle and prone to breakage when wet. So blow-dry it thoroughly beforehand, preferably in the air or with a blow-dryer on low heat.
2/ Use a humidifier in the bedroom, as it helps to maintain the right level of humidity in the room, preventing hair from drying out during the night. This is especially useful if you sleep in a heated room, which tends to dry out the air.
3/ Avoid using tight rubber bands to hold your hair in place, instead use silk scrunchies. The problem with scrunchies is that they can break the hair and leave marks that contribute to frizz and damage. Incorporating these nighttime hair care tips into your winter routine will help keep your hair hydrated, soft and frizz-free, ready to face the challenges of the cold.
