‘Gianni Versace Retrospective’ arrives in Malaga to make its mark

Malaga was dressed in luxury and art to welcome one of the most eagerly awaited exhibitions of the year: Gianni Versace Retrospective, an unprecedented show that has found its home at the Centro Cultural Fundación Unicaja. The invitation was clear: to immerse oneself in the mind and legacy of a designer who changed the course of global fashion forever. And at this event, HIGHXTAR had the honour of witnessing the inauguration.

Curated by Karl Von der Ahé and Saskia Lubnow, Gianni Versace Retrospective, which will be open until 30 June, invites us to delve into the essence of a man who understood fashion as a total art form. Through more than 500 original pieces-including iconic looks, accessories, unpublished photographs, fabrics, drawings, and prototypes-the exhibition reveals Versace’s multiple layers, his aesthetic vision, and his unparalleled ability to transform pop culture into pure elegance.

The journey begins with Gianni’s early years in southern Italy, where his passion for architecture and classical cultures merged with his natural talent for design. Throughout the nine sections of the exhibition, from Magna Graecia to Punk and Bondage, we discover the influences that shaped Versace’s career: ancient Greece, baroque Italy, 80s pop art and the rebelliousness of the punk movement. Each section is a reflection of how Gianni used fashion to express not only his creativity, but also to challenge convention.

The 1990s becomes a highlight of the exhibition. It is in this period that Versace redefines luxury with a vibrant intensity, marked by his Miami Beach and iconic Bondage collections, where sensuality and power are intertwined through leather and metal. Celebrities of the era, from Madonna to Bon Jovi, became his muses, and the exhibition showcases the looks that defined a generation. The interpretation of ‘rebelliously glamorous’ in the Punk collection, with its unmistakable safety pins and provocative sensuality, stands out as one of its most daring and revolutionary proposals.

What is most surprising, however, is the exclusive behind-the-scenes look that this exhibition offers. Never-before-seen photographs, a recreation of Gianni Versace’s atelier, and prototypes of his collections allow us to understand the process that brought his most iconic creations to life. Each piece reveals the obsession for perfection and attention to detail that defined Versace, who never ceased to dazzle with his ability to reinvent fashion.

During the inauguration, a select list of guests gathered to enjoy an event full of glamour and creativity, including Jessica Goicoechea, Carla Paucar, Alejandro Palomo, Maria Escoté and many more. Between conversations, the room was filled with admiration for the work of a man who left an indelible mark on fashion and popular culture. The smiles of the attendees reflected the same brightness as the pieces on display: a mixture of admiration and respect for a legacy that transcends time.

Admission to the centre is a donation of 3 euros and the proceeds will go entirely to the Quiero Trabajo Foundation and the Dosta Con Alma Gitana Association. In addition, free guided tours will be offered for groups of up to 25 people, from Monday to Friday at 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 16:30 and 17:30; on Saturdays at 11:00, 12:00, 16:30 and 17:30, and on Sundays at 11:00 and 12:00.
