Prime Video’s Justin Kurzel’s signature series arrives with a story that promises to leave its mark. Adapted from Richard Flanagan’s award-winning novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the production immerses us in a harrowing tale that explores the price of war and the complexities of the human soul. Starring Jacob Elordi as Dorrigo Evans, an Australian medical officer who becomes a Japanese prisoner of war, the series is a visual and emotional display that goes beyond the expected.
Evans, as well as facing the brutality of the concentration camp, is marked by a passionate but impossible love affair with Amy Mulvaney, played by Odessa Young, who is his uncle’s wife. This relationship, fraught with tension and secrets, becomes one of the pillars of the plot, as Elordi plays a war hero who, upon returning home, reinvents himself as a surgeon revered by all.
The script, by Shaun Grant, spans a decade, shaping a narrative in which internal conflicts intertwine with the physical settings of New South Wales, Australia. The series, which doesn’t skimp on emotion or shocking scenes, boasts an all-star cast that also includes Ciarán Hinds, Olivia DeJonge, Heather Mitchell, Show Kasamatsu, Thomas Weatherall and Simon Baker.
As for its premiere, The Narrow Road to the Deep North made its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival, but it will be April 18 when the first five episodes will be available for streaming in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Another step forward for Prime Video in its expansion of Australian content, with more than 30 local original productions from 2019.
Get ready for a visual experience that not only celebrates human resilience, but also invites you to reflect on the invisible scars of war and loves that transcend time and space.
