The iconic Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition has arrived in Seoul, completely transforming the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) into an immersive journey through nearly eight decades of creative legacy. This new edition was conceived by architectural firm OMA, with design by Shohei Shigematsu, and marks the fourth collaboration between Dior and the brand following stops in Denver, Dallas and Tokyo.
Located in the impressive column-free space of Art Hall 1, the exhibition unfolds as a visual and sensory narrative that fuses Dior’s imagery with key elements of Korean cultural heritage. Instead of a classic gallery structure, the exhibition flows organically through thematic rooms, all connected by a central core: ‘The Garden’.
This dreamlike garden, inspired by the madang – the traditional courtyard of Korean hanok houses – houses an imposing 12-metre white ceramic moon, a contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic moon jar, a symbol of harmony and simplicity. Inside, an immersive projection dome and a forest of hanji paper by Korean artist Hyun Joo Kim transform the space into an ethereal sanctuary between tradition and futurism.
Each room reinterprets the Dior codes through a Korean perspective. In ‘Dior Legacy’, a fluid structure inspired by jogakbo (traditional patchwork) narrates the evolution of the Maison’s creative directors. ‘Lady Dior’, on the other hand, immerses itself in the aesthetics of red lacquered showcases to present the iconic handbag in the form of a sculptural installation. The tour is completed by rooms dedicated to 30 Avenue Montaigne, The New Look, Miss Dior and Colorama.
Fashion, architecture and culture are in dialogue in an installation that redefines the concept of a fashion exhibition. Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams is now open to the public at the DDP in Seoul. A must-see for those who understand fashion as total art.
