Gimaguas x Havaianas flip-flops inspire a DIY trend on TikTok

With the arrival of summer, flip-flops are once again taking their place as the footwear of choice for hot days. But this season, not just any model is getting all the attention. The Gimaguas x Havaianas, reinterpreted with metallic studs, have burst into the collective imagination as one of TikTok’s most replicated objects of desire. And, as it usually happens in the age of virality, what started as a proposal with an author’s stamp has ended up becoming a DIY trend.

Inspired by a simple yet elevated silhouette with metallic detailing, the original flip-flops – priced at €85 – have already been spotted on celebrities such as Kylie Jenner. This hype has driven a 229% increase in searches for the model, according to JD Sports data. The problem comes when the demand turns into a collective experiment: TikTok has seen hundreds of users, in an attempt to recreate the design at low cost, begin to insert silver pushpins into basic rubber flip-flops.

Videos showing the customisation process have already surpassed 700,000 views, and warnings of all kinds are beginning to emerge in the comments. From concerns about the stability of the tacks to more obvious fears: metal exposed to the sun can heat up to dangerous levels, and the flexible material of the sandals is not designed to be punctured.

Footwear experts warn of the many risks associated with this homemade trend. The tacks, not being firmly fixed, can become dislodged or come loose with use, causing chafing or even foot injuries. In addition, overheating of metal parts after prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to burns. This is compounded by premature wear of the material: by puncturing the rubber with several stress points, the structure of the sole is compromised, which can lead to breakage, tripping or even accidents if a loose drawing pin is stepped on.

This phenomenon appears in a context where the aesthetics of the 2000s are making a strong comeback. The studs, a symbol of alternative style in that decade, have found a new life in accessories, jeans, bikinis and footwear. But unlike then, the approach now is more refined. Emily Ratajkowski or Sofia Richie have contributed to this resignification of the studded, taking it to more sophisticated territories.

The most eagerly awaited collaboration of the summer.
