The new American Eagle campaign starring Sydney Sweeney has sparked controversy since its launch. The advert plays on the double meaning between “jeans” and “genes,” something many have interpreted as carrying racial undertones. Doja Cat was quick to react.
In the spot, Sweeney, the Euphoria actress, narrates: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits such as hair colour, personality, and even eye colour,” as the camera pans across her body. She then fastens her jeans and, looking directly at the camera, concludes: “My jeans are blue.”
The fact that Sweeney — a white woman celebrated for her blue eyes and blonde hair — is the face of a campaign linking physical attributes to the idea of “genes” has been enough to provoke criticism on social media. The advert’s aesthetic has been read as a glorification of certain racial standards.
Doja Cat did not miss the opportunity. The artist posted a TikTok in which she parodies the advert with a distorted voice and southern accent, repeating Sydney Sweeney’s lines with clear irony.
American Eagle, meanwhile, has reinforced the message with an Instagram reel — which has already surpassed one million views — showing Sweeney posing in front of a poster that reads “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.” The word “genes” is then crossed out and replaced with “jeans.”
Neither the brand nor the actress have publicly responded to the controversy.
