Premiered in The Venice Film Festival, Coppola documentary on Marc Jacobs delves into the designer’s creative process and the relationship he has maintained with the filmmaker for almost thirty years.

Presented out of competition, the documentary follows Jacobs as he prepares his show for New York Fashion Week Spring 2024. Through interviews, archive footage and backstage scenes, the film attempts to offer a view of a designer’s work at the moment of creation. Coppola describes the project as a personal approach, presented in Venice, intending to show Marc Jacobs in his daily work without the camera’s presence feeling intrusive.

Jacobs, who led the Louis Vuitton line from 1997 to 2014, has shaped the brand that bears his name with an urban and contemporary approach. Regarding the documentary, he stated that he perceives it as recognition of his work and the relationship he maintains with the filmmaker.

The documentary premieres in a context of industry change. According to The Wall Street Journal, LVMH is reportedly considering the sale of Jacobs’ brand, valued at approximately 1 billion dollars. Marc by Sofia thus presents itself as a record of a designer’s creative practice in his environment, rather than a story about the industry or the market.
