Intimacy in K-pop.
Rosé, a member of BLACKPINK, experienced a deeply emotional moment when Alex Cooper asked her on the Call Her Daddy podcast whether she was seeing anyone. The singer became visibly nervous and struggled to answer. She explained that she fears anything she says will be taken out of context by the media and social networks, turning into headlines that do not represent who she really is.
Rosé said that even a simple reply can spark rumours or unfair judgements. That is why she feels anxious when people bring up her love life. According to her, many people twist her words into stories that paint her in a way that is not true, which leaves her feeling sad and frustrated.
The singer also spoke about the K-pop industry. She explained that agencies often control many aspects of artists’ private lives, including who they can date and what they are allowed to show in public. Companies believe that a romantic relationship can change how fans see their idols.
In 2017, the members of BLACKPINK revealed on SBS’s Party People that their agency banned them from smoking, drinking, going to clubs, or getting tattoos and cosmetic surgery, although exceptions could be made with the approval of YG Entertainment’s then CEO, Yang Hyun-Suk. These rules showed the strict control the K-pop industry has over artists’ personal lives.
Although Rosé is a global star who fills stadiums, she said she still sees herself as an ordinary person. She shared that she dreams of simple things, like walking down the street without worry or going to a theme park with friends or a partner, without having to hide or feel watched all the time.
At the same time, she is living through one of the most important moments of her career. Thanks to her hit APT with Bruno Mars, Rosé has been nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2026 Grammy Awards, confirming her impact beyond K-pop.
