Los Angeles and Tokyo are embarking on a direct dialogue, driven by the same creative energy.
This season, GUESS JEANS and HYSTERIC GLAMOUR have joined forces to create a new cinematic narrative set in a motel, unfolding as a three-act story. The first act takes place in a room charged with aesthetic tension; the second, on a bespoke studio set; and the third, on location bathed in the Californian sunshine.
Here, the West Coast ethos – surfing, skateboarding, music – intertwines with the underground spirit that defines HYSTERIC GLAMOUR, giving rise to a world of contrasts that is nonetheless deeply enriching, playful, provocative, nostalgic and very much of the moment. Classic American denim silhouettes are transformed through superimposed graphics, visual overlays and direct references to both brands’ archives.
Particularly noteworthy is the artisanal approach taken with the designs, including labels applied as if they were vintage stickers, visible stitching that highlights the construction, and laser treatments on fabrics that add a new dimension. All of this is combined with retro materials inspired by Venice Beach, where multicoloured stripes and distressed finishes evoke a very distinct vintage feel.
‘GUESS JEANS and I belong to the same era. For this collaboration, I reinterpreted the nostalgia I felt for GUESS JEANS through the lens of HYSTERIC GLAMOUR. I hope the new generation will enjoy styling these pieces in their own way,’ says Nobuhiko Kitamura.
The collection will be available from 3 April.
