Something old, something new, something borrowed: how Zendaya connects her looks in The Drama

Zendaya is turning the The Drama press tour into something more than a string of red carpet appearances. In fact, this has become fairly standard in film promotion, where wardrobe becomes part of the storytelling. We saw it recently with Margot Robbie — and Jacob Elordi — in Wuthering Heights, playing into that same visual language. And in Zendaya’s case, it’s nothing new. She did it in Spider-Man, where her looks echoed the youthful, superhero world of the franchise, and again in Challengers, where each appearance extended the film’s sharp, sporty and highly controlled aesthetic. Zendaya clearly understands that a press tour doesn’t begin and end on screen — it plays out in front of the cameras too.

This time, though, alongside Robert Pattinson, the message feels even more refined. Because if you look closely at what she’s doing throughout The Drama press run, it’s not just fashion — it’s a clear nod to the classic bridal code of “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”. The key is that she’s not spelling it out or making it obvious, she’s letting it unfold look by look. And with the constant speculation surrounding her personal life and her relationship with Tom Holland, it’s hard not to read into it on that level too, even if she hasn’t said a word.

Something old

To start, Los Angeles. A white Vivienne Westwood dress that wasn’t new at all, but pulled from her own archive — the very same one she wore to the 2015 Oscars. This is where the game begins quite clearly, with Zendaya opening the narrative with a textbook “something old”. It’s not just nostalgia, it’s the first clue.

Something new

Then comes Paris, and a shift — but without breaking the thread. Another white dress, this time entirely new, designed by Louis Vuitton. Here she delivers the “something new” cleanly and directly. And when you place it next to Los Angeles, the pattern starts to become obvious. It’s no longer just a great standalone look, it’s part of a sequence.

Something borrowed

Rome brings the final piece so far. A black Armani Privé gown that wasn’t originally hers, previously worn by Cate Blanchett at the Venice Film Festival and later at the 2022 SAG Awards. This is where she slips in the “something borrowed”, subtly but unmistakably — down to the jewellery. At this point, there’s no real doubt. The pieces fit together too neatly for it to be coincidence.

All that’s left is the blue

With that progression, only one piece of the puzzle remains: blue. And given how carefully this has all been mapped out, it would be surprising if it didn’t appear in the coming days as part of the same press tour. There are still stops ahead before The Drama premieres in Spain this May — and the trailer is already out — so the timing lines up. If Zendaya follows through, the next look should deliver that final “something blue”, neatly closing the loop just before the release.
