A surprise triple album.

Some artists spend months announcing an album, releasing teasers bit by bit and turning each one into an event; then there’s Drake, who, after weeks of promoting Iceman alongside a giant block of ice, ended up defying all industry conventions by releasing three full-length albums on the same day. On 15 May, when everything pointed to Iceman marking his big solo comeback, the Canadian also released Habibti and Maid Of Honour, leaving his fans with 43 new tracks in a matter of hours.

The move not only took his fans by surprise, but also ended up taking streaming platforms by storm. In just 24 hours, Drake became the most-streamed artist of 2026 on Spotify, whilst Iceman recorded the biggest single-day debut of the year for an album on the platform. As if that weren’t enough, ‘Make Them Cry’ ended up being crowned the most-streamed song of the year in a single day, confirming that, when Drake wants to dominate the conversation, he rarely falls short.

Three albums, three worlds

Although the release may seem completely chaotic, each album is in a league of its own. Iceman stands out as the most ambitious project of the release, featuring 18 tracks and collaborations with Future, 21 Savage and Molly Santana. It’s an album defined by the coldest rap and that massive production style that Drake has spent years perfecting.

On the other hand, Habibti slows the pace and moves towards a more melodic, nocturnal sound. Its 11 tracks, featuring PartyNextDoor and Sexyy Red, bring back the Canadian artist’s more emotional, R&B side.

Meanwhile, Maid Of Honour takes a much more hybrid approach, designed for the club. The album features 14 tracks and collaborations with Central Cee, Popcaan and Iconic Savvy, making it clear that Drake doesn’t just want to dominate the charts, but also the playlists all summer long.

The obsession with records

The industry is still trying to understand why Drake decided to release three albums at the same time, although the answer seems quite simple: records. According to various estimates by the US music press, the Canadian artist could simultaneously place all three of his albums at the top of the Billboard 200 – a feat that is practically impossible even in the midst of the streaming era. And there is more at stake. If any of the three projects reaches number one, Drake would break the historic tie he shares with Jay-Z as the rapper with the most number-one albums in the United States.

As if the narrative weren’t obvious enough, the artist himself ended up fuelling the comparisons even further by sharing a picture of himself wearing a glove signed by Michael Jackson. The internet, of course, took exactly two minutes to turn it into a meme.

Kendrick Lamar remains in the spotlight

Beyond the records and streaming figures, these albums also serve as a direct response to the media storm caused by the clash between Drake and Kendrick Lamar in 2024. A rivalry that finally came to a head after ‘Not Like Us’ — the track in which Kendrick Lamar accused Drake of inappropriate behaviour towards minors and questioned his public image — becoming one of the most aggressive moments of the entire feud.

And although Drake avoids turning the albums into an explicit response, the references are everywhere. Throughout the three projects, there are verses about betrayals, tensions within the industry, failed reconciliations and criticism of the public image left in the wake of the conflict.

Amid controversy and millions

The release also comes at one of the most turbulent moments in Drake’s career. Over the past few months, the Canadian artist has been embroiled in controversies surrounding online gambling, alleged irregularities regarding streaming figures, and several indirect clashes within the US rap scene.

As if that weren’t enough, Iceman also found himself drawn into the political debate after an edited image of the album cover went viral, featuring references to the ‘MAGA’ slogan — an acronym for ‘Make America Great Again’, the slogan popularised by Donald Trump. The image further fuelled the buzz on social media and added a new layer of controversy to a release that was already dominating the internet.
