Whoever won yesterday’s Wimbledon tennis championship final was going to wear a Rolex on their wrist to collect and kiss the trophy. Because Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who were facing each other to add another Grand Slam to their trophies, are ambassadors of the Swiss watchmaker, which has been the official timekeeper of the oldest tournament in the world (Wimbledon was born in 1877) since 1978. Iga Świątek, the Polish tennis player who won the women’s singles at the British tournament on Saturday, is also associated with the brand, so it was all in-house.
Sinner became a Rolex ‘friend’ in 2020, two years before Alcaraz, who became a Rolex ‘friend’ in 2022. Lately, both prefer to wear a Cosmograph Daytona from the brand to adorn themselves. It is one of the most sought-after models by watch aficionados, and yesterday we saw two on centre court at Wimbledon: the Daytona in yellow gold with a turquoise dial (which was launched in April this year) by the Spaniard, and the Daytona in Everose gold with a black dial by the Italian.
Sinner, the winner of the match and world number one according to the ATP rankings, wore the same chronograph throughout the tournament, which took place between 30 June and 13 July at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. His Daytona “Sundust”, the crown brand’s Reference 126515LN, measures 40 mm in diameter, and combines the pink gold of the case with a black Cerachrom bezel with a tachymetric scale for calculating average speeds.
In addition to the Everose gold, its warmth is provided by the sand-blasted dial, called Sundust or sun dust, contrasting with the three black counters. The watch is powered by the Rolex-manufactured Calibre 4131, which debuted around 2008. And it is fitted with an Oysterflex bracelet, the brand’s sportiest. A piece befitting a worthy winner of Wimbledon, who will no doubt be battling with Alcaraz for more epic finals in the years to come, both of whom will be sporting their favourite Rolexes.
The relationship between Rolex and cinema is growing closer.
