A$AP Rocky’s highly anticipated fourth album, Don’t Be Dumb, was shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, originally scheduled for August 30th. However, in an unexpected twist, the project has faced a delay that has left us waiting a little longer than expected. In his recent interview for the cover of Billboard, Rocky opened up about the challenges that have hindered the release.
Shortly after, he took to X to address his fans directly, offering an explanation that reveals the magnitude of his ambition: “LEAKS AND SAMPLE CLEARANCES ARE INTERRUPTING THE ALBUM. IT’S BEEN 6 YEARS AND I WANT TO MAKE THE BEST ALBUM EVER. I’M SORRY FOR THE WAIT.” His message not only reveals frustration over the setbacks, but also the level of perfectionism with which he is approaching this new work.
In the conversation with Billboard, Rocky dropped some heavyweight names that have joined the project, including Tyler, The Creator, Pharrell, Mike Dean, Hitkidd, Madlib, Metro Boomin and The Alchemist, among others. These high-caliber collaborations promise an album that fuses styles and influences, staying true to the eclectic essence that has always defined A$AP Rocky.
An unexpected mention was director Tim Burton, to whom Rocky showed his album in a private session: “I sat down and played the album for Tim Burton, and he was playing it heavy,” he commented. According to the rapper, the Beetlejuice creator seemed genuinely impressed, “shaking his head” and acknowledging the versatility of the sound: “It’s like, ‘Wow! I didn’t know you made that kind of music!’”
Although the release is now scheduled for fall, a definitive date has yet to be confirmed, leaving the public in anticipation of what promises to be one of the most ambitious records of his career after six years of waiting. With the bar set so high and a stellar lineup of collaborators, it’s clear that Rocky isn’t just looking to make noise, but to cement his musical legacy in a big way.
