Adele received harsh criticism among the transgender community for the speech she gave after receiving the ‘Artist of the Year’ award at the BRIT Awards.
For the 2022 edition, the British Phonographic Industry decided that there would be a single award for Artist of the Year, including both male and female artists in the same category. The decision came as a surprise as the awards normally have categories for Male Artist of the Year and Female Artist of the Year.
“Thank you all. I really wasn’t expecting this award. I love being an artist and I really can’t believe that this is my job. I understand why they changed the name and the category of this award, but, I really love being a woman and I love being a female artist. I’m very proud of that,” Adele declared.
This particular statement has sparked a heated debate online, where people were quick to point the finger at the vocalist for being a TERF, also known as a transgender radical feminist.
“Who would have thought #Adele was transphobic and would use her platform to call for the destruction of the trans community? Especially confused teens,” tweeted one user. Another said: “Please no, ADELE can’t be TERF. That last comment, while ambiguous, could be perceived as TERF-y”.
Meanwhile, feminist Milli Hill has expressed her views on the matter. “Hopefully anyone who has any doubt that we are in the grip of a harmful ideology will have their eyes wide open as they see how controversial it has become for a woman to say, ‘I love being a woman'”.
Others were. was quick to counter the statement and responded : “To see people like Milli using the words of Adele, who has shown time and time again her support for the LGBTQ+ community, just goes to show that they will use anything they can as a weapon in their attack on trans people.”
