adidas supports positive support in sport with ‘You Got This’

Maintaining its commitment to the mental health of athletes through its new global campaign starring Aitana Bonmatí and Lamine Yamal.

The three stripes giant has just released a global study that highlights the importance of positive support and the influence that coaches, parents, fans and teammates can have on athletes’ confidence.

The research, conducted among more than 12,000 athletes from 24 different countries, has revealed an alarming reality: 4 out of 5 amateur athletes are constantly affected by negative attitudes coming from their own teammates. Shouting over the scoreboard, excessive instructions during competitions and obsession with the final result are some of the unconstructive behaviours that directly affect motivation and the desire to continue in sport.

In its mission to change this picture, adidas has launched its global ‘You Got This’ campaign, motivated by the ‘Sideline Effect’. This research shows that negative attitudes from within the field can undermine the confidence of athletes, especially young athletes. And in an environment where external pressures are increasingly intense, support from the inner circle can make a real difference.

To counter this worrying phenomenon, the brand is introducing ‘Sideline Effects’, a series of key behaviours to transform team culture and foster a supportive environment. Developed in collaboration with sports experts and validated by professionals, they focus on creating a positive and inspiring environment.

In addition, the initiative is backed by some of the most prominent figures in international sport, such as Aitana Bonmatí and Lamine Yamal, who join adidas in driving change. Together with them, coach Jürgen Klopp presents the guidelines that can change the perspective of coaches and fans.

‘This has been a year of football that I will never forget, and it would not have been possible without the support of my family, my teammates and of course my community, 304. Throughout the year, and especially in times of increased pressure, I have been able to apply many of the tips from the adidas Sideline Essentials. Having the confidence and support of my family, friends and community has allowed me to stay focused and achieve many of my dreams so far,’ says Lamine.

For her part, Aitana comments that ‘football has allowed me to fulfil dreams I never imagined. Winning the World Cup in 2023, the Nations League in 2024 and the Champions League three times are some of my greatest achievements, and I know that none of this would have been possible without the support of those who have always been by my side. Having positive influences in our environment is key, which is why I continue to work with promising young players through my campus, Campus Aitana. Having been through academies during my training, I know how important it is that coaches, peers and fans understand how to best support players. The adidas Sideline Essentials can help create an environment where athletes can focus on their passion and perform at their best, without unnecessary pressure.’

The ultimate goal is to motivate up to 20 million people to get active and enjoy sport on a regular basis.
