If there is something we learned with Jeremy Scott at the head of Moschino for 10 years, is that the house always understands fashion as a way of escapism to reality with fun designs, full of humor and irony and color. Adrian Appiolaza, who accumulates a vast experience in houses like Alexander McQueen, Loewe, or Miu Miu, has taken over the baton of the house founded by Franco Moschino and in what is his first collection for men, the designer invites us on a journey into our inner and outer world in equal parts.
“Better to dress the way you want to than the way you should”. That is the message that Adrian Appiolaza has given us in his first men’s collection for Moschino. Because fashion is not only clothes but a journey towards the expression of individuality, which sometimes may seem a disjointed mixture of very different concepts, but in reality it is a paradise of personal freedom, in which to explore the deepest corners of our being. This journey, which is fundamentally Moschino, is reflected in each garment, each look, which is presented as a unique entity with its own story to tell.
In fact, the collection pays homage to Franco Moschino, capturing gestures, memories and flashes of the past. Prints from the ’90s, such as peace flowers, soccer balls and ironic pizza stains, reappear under Appiolaza’s prism. The famous twisted trench-coats, lingerie and even the iconic “Survival” jacket from Spring-Summer 1992 is reinvented to suit both urban living and getaway.
Here, a woman’s scarf can become a skirt, and a man’s shirt can become a wedding dress. Traditions are broken, and new identities emerge: an Inspector Gadget, a hotel guest, explorers, safari travelers, lovers of Italy and soccer… Moschino’s characters are true explorers, of their inner world but also of the globe. They move between spaces, ideas and ideals, always looking for something new.
A briefcase in the shape of the Moschino Love heart reminds us to do only what we love. Eggs in all shapes, a croissant as a necklace, watermelons, bananas, impossible headdresses and a sense of traveling are printed on executive looks in traditional tailoring, which is deconstructed and reconstructed, losing its seriousness when a fried egg suddenly lands in a pocket or two boiled eggs become earrings. water bottles, watermelons, ears of wheat, bananas and fried eggs.
In a world where getting lost can be the best way to find yourself, Moschino shows us the true meaning of life, which is to live it. Just as every life is an adventure, in this Appiolaza collection every garment is a journey.
