The new sci-fi comedy directed by Wes Anderson is coming soon to the big screen to move all its fandom through another of his aesthetic and hedonistic creations tinged with pastel colors. But first, let’s dive into the synopsis and all the details that make up “Asteroid City”.
The film, starring an all-star cast including Maya Hawke, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson and Tilda Swinton, features a larger cast than most of the American director’s films, which are collective in nature. Thus, Tom Hanks makes his debut in Wes Anderson’s films, alongside actors already resident in his own universe such as Wes Jason Schwartzman and Ed Norton.
This new film project was shot in Chinchón (Spain) in 2021, and tells the story of a convention of young astronauts/space cadets that is altered by a series of world-changing events in 1955, including an unexpected alien invasion.
The film’s art director and set designer, Sonia Nolla, has shared exclusive images of the sets on her website, in which we can see the entire desert city filled with fairground rides, neon-lit motels, vending machines and roadside restaurants, coordinated through Anderson’s symmetrical and visual identity.
“Asteroid City” will hit theaters in the U.S. on June 16, prior to a nationwide release and in Spain on June 23.
