Independent fashion is reinventing itself in every corner of the map: from Paris to Kiev, via Toronto and New York. This month, we select six names that, with diverse languages but the same intention – to break the mold and rethink the future of fashion – are making a difference. Elevated craftsmanship, recycling as a conceptual axis and a sensual approach to design are some of the constants in these proposals that are making their way. Here are our picks for April.
1. Ksenia Schneider
Founded in Kiev by Ksenia and Anton Schnaider, this firm has been redefining denim from a sustainable and digital approach since 2011. Their great success: turning vintage garments into forward-thinking designs. In 2016, the demi jeans -a mix between mom jeans and skater shorts- put their name on the global radar, conquering figures such as Bella Hadid or Dua Lipa. Now, they have repeated the formula again with the body Jeans. With precise cuts and a very experimental approach to design, KSENIASCHNAIDER is one of the benchmarks of European upcycling.
2. Re-Pull
Born in Toronto in 2023 under the direction of stylist Juliana Schiavinatto, RE-PULL bets on handmade signature pieces made from recycled materials. Her vision: functional and androgynous clothing inspired by the rhythm of the city. Each design is unique, thought from real sustainability and with a very urban approach. A brand that not only proposes aesthetics, but also a more conscious way of consuming fashion.
3. Denim-Jun
Formerly known as Slight Vogue, this brand in full creative transformation is gaining ground with unique pieces that work with denim from a Japanese perspective. Its strong point: handcrafted tailoring applied to denim, in garments that function as everyday sculptures. If you are interested in denim, and you love Japanese design, this is your brand.
4. Paul Dutreuil
Since the age of 17, Paul Dutreuil has been customizing jeans as an act of personal expression. After training at Atelier Chardon Savard, he starts collaborating with artists and musicians, creating pieces for concerts and editorials. In 2021, he wins the Val d’Oise Young Creator Award and since then, his work mixes streetwear, textile art and collaborations such as the one with LaFam.
5. LARUICCI
What started as a jewelry brand in 2009 is now a complete universe. Founded by Lauren Ruicci, LARUICCI fuses the energy of downtown New York with the elegance of Paris. Since 2019, together with designer Cem Cinar, they have expanded their proposal to ready-to-wear collections with a very daring approach. Each collection is a proposal in which fashion, performance and art come together. Not suitable for minimalists.
6. Lucille Thièvre
In 2019, Lucille Thièvre launches her eponymous brand after working in Parisian luxury houses. From the Ateliers du Wonder, her proposal moves away from the commercial rhythm and focuses on made-to-measure, sensual, intimate garments… Winner of the Grand Prix de la Création de Paris in 2024, Lucille designs as if she were sculpting flowers on the body: emotional pieces, full of textures.
