Japanese architect Tadao Ando has inaugurated a meditation pavilion called “Space of Light” at the SAN Museum of South Korea in Wonju City.

The work combines serenity with a clean, modern design. The pavilion is characterized by a harmonious combination of light, concrete, clean lines and a connection to nature. Its square concrete structure features delicate cross-shaped cut-outs in the roof, which allow sunlight to pass through, creating unique lighting effects.

Although not conceived as a religious space, the “Space of Light” shares similarities with the famous Ando Church of Light in Osaka, Japan. This new pavilion was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the SAN Museum, in whose design Tadao Ando also played a crucial role.

“In the Light Space, light falls directly from the sky, as in the Pantheon in Rome. I think this has a significant impact. When you look at the light, there is a feeling that reaches the heart,” Ando shared. “People will be able to feel that they are directly encountering nature. With ‘Space of Light,’ I wanted to create a space where nature and humans come together.”
