Beate Karlsson of AVAVAV has done it again. If for SS23 she surprised the public with models that tripped on the catwalk, this time she made an impact with garments that fell apart with every step.
The creative director criticised the seriousness and superficiality of the fashion industry in her latest show for AVAVAV on the last day of MFW. As the models’ outfits were torn to shreds as they walked down the runway, viewers began to question their own perception of luxury.
‘Fake it till you break it’ also explores the concept of shame in terms of quality and craftsmanship as well as the vulnerability intrinsic to this discipline.
“I wondered why luxury is so serious, is it because we strive to be perfect, can poor quality still be luxurious? The last collection was about maintaining a false projection of wealth and the personal failure of losing face when this illusion collapses,” says Karlsson. “I continue with this theme as there is something very interesting about shame and what happens when we are vulnerable. I asked myself what is the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a fashion house and I thought it might be the breaking of a garment,” he adds.
And we agree with the creative: Shame could be the most luxurious accessory one can wear.
