Awake NY’s commemorative collection pays tribute to the legacy of Scott-Heron, known for his impact on spoken word in the 1970s and 1980s, and includes a variety of garments decorated with motifs inspired by his most notable works.
“[Scott-Heron’s] lyrics often addressed social issues such as racism, poverty and drug addiction,” Awake shared on Instagram alongside the announcement of the collection. “We honor their legacy and impact with this exclusive collection.”
The garments feature graphics and lettering related to Scott-Heron’s significant contributions. For example, the “Camp Shirt” showcases prints from Scott-Heron’s famous book of poetry, “Now and Then,” while the sweatshirt highlights lyrics from his famous jazz song, “Lady Day and John Coltrane.”
The collection also includes a long-sleeve T-shirt with portraits of Scott-Heron alongside lyrics from “Pieces of a Man,” and a six-panel cap with “Lady Day and John Coltrane” inscribed on the front. In addition, the collection’s rug features the cover of Scott-Heron’s book of poetry, “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox.”
The Gil Scott-Heron collection by Awake NY is now available in its online store, with prices ranging from $60 to $225 USD.
