Basquiat’s ‘Saturday Night’ to be auctioned at Christie’s Hong Kong for $16 million

A Basquiat masterpiece, Saturday Night (1984), is set to take centre stage at Christie’s Hong Kong’s highly anticipated auction of 20th and 21st century art. This monumental painting, with its intense palette of pinks and maroons, will take centre stage at the sale, which will be held in a particularly significant week, coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong. With an estimate of between $13 million and $16 million, the painting is not just a work of art, but a testament to Basquiat’s unrepeatable genius.

Christie’s describes the work as ‘an immersive piece, among the most iconic of his legacy’, a showcase of his ability to masterfully interweave text, iconography and human figures. 1984 was a turning point for Basquiat, establishing him as an undisputed genius of his time. It was precisely in this year that his first major exhibition, Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings 1981-1984, toured institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

Ada Tsui, head of 20th/20th century art sales at Christie’s Asia Pacific, said: ‘It is an honour to present Saturday Night, a masterpiece that encapsulates Basquiat’s unmistakable visual language. Tsui also highlighted Christie’s commitment to Basquiat’s Asian market, which began in 2021 with the historic sale of Warrior (1982), which fetched a record $41.8 million in Hong Kong.

The public preview of the piece will take place from 25-27 March at Christie’s Hong Kong premises, prior to the live auction scheduled for 28 March. A landmark event not only for the art market, but also for Basquiat collectors and fans, who will have the opportunity to witness a work that continues to dazzle generations.

POLAROID X JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT.
